Friday rolled around, and I hadnât heard a peep from Layla. If I werenât dying to see her, I wouldâve canceled on everyone tonight, but I wasnât going to let her off the hook that easy. Sheâd probably be happy if I did.
I didnât give her any warning. Weâd made plans weeks ago, so I showed up at her place at seven as weâd discussed. When she opened the door, her eyes went wide when she saw me. She was in a towel and nowhere near ready.
âShit. Iâm sorry. I totally forgot.â
Wow. Was she serious right now? âForget it. I can go without you; Iâll just tell them youâre sick.â
She stared at me without blinking and didnât say anything. I waited another thirty seconds before turning and walking away.
âAre you for real?â
I turned around to find her glaring at me with her hand on her hip like I was the one who did something wrong.
I stepped up close and looked down at her. âLayla, I havenât seen you for almost two weeks. Your texts are short at best, and then you forget about tonight. What did you expect my reaction would be?â
âIâm sorry. I wasnât feeling well last week, and Iâve had a lot on my mind.â
I wanted nothing more than to kiss her and have those same feelings again, but I wasnât going to make this easy for her. Sheâd been avoiding me since the engagement party.
I reached up and cupped her cheek. âLayla, I know you say you werenât feeling well, and Iâll give you that, but youâve been avoiding me a lot since you moved back home. I feel like youâve pushed me away at every turn. What did I do wrong?â
Her eyes looked down and then back up to mine. âNothing. Everything is fine. Can I get ready? As long as I donât have to get all dolled up, Iâll be ready in ten minutes.â
I released her face and stepped back. âHave at it.â
She sighed. âHave a seat, and Iâll be quick. Promise.â
Sure enough, ten minutes later, she walked out looking hot as ever in a pair of skinny jeans and a graphic tee with her hair up in a messy bun. âPlease tell me that this is casual, and I wonât look like a bum.â
âYou look great.â
She picked up her keys. âReady?â
âReady.â
Before we walked outside, she asked. âHey, can we take the Mercedes?â
My brow furrowed. âSureâ¦why? Do you have something against the Porsche?â
She bit her lip and shrugged. âNo, I just love it. I donât know why.â
âTo the G-Wagon.â I put my arm up like Superman and ran in a circle around her.
She slapped me on the shoulder. âYouâre such a dork.â
The first half of the ride was quiet. I wanted to push her to talk to me, but I wasnât about to piss her off. I wanted us to have a good night, and that wouldnât help.
Her leg had been bouncing, and she couldnât seem to sit still. She seemed to be more nervous now than before the engagement party.
